How to use the pods to send samples
Pod machines can be used to send blood (and other) samples to the lab and are located on most wards. Please ask a member of staff to locate them for you if it is not clear.
Some samples should not be sent via the pod system, for example CSF or pleural aspirates. These will need taken to the labs by hand.
To use the pod to send samples to the lab:
- Label and bag your sample.
- Place inside a red capsule (other colours are for other departments such as pharmacy and should not be used to avoid contamination). If there are no capsules left either locate the nearest alternative pod or phone the lab and ask for a spare to be sent to your location.
- Put the capsule into the tube and press 369 and then E.
- You should receive a message saying it has been accepted but it is sensible to wait to ensure the pod goes before you leave.
